Bits and pieces that may or may not make it into our stories.

Many are inspired by prompts. If so we will list the prompt used.

Prompt by moonlitravingsofthestoryteller on Tumblr
"I couldn't save her."
"I know it hurts, but maybe it's time to accept that it wasn't your job to save her."

He sat there as if I had hit him with a stun grenade. "But she was my wife."
"Yes, but she didn't appreciate you as her husband. She made the choice to turn on you and everything you have supported."
"But I should have supported her."
"Damian," I sat beside him, "were you part of the Coalition before meeting her?"
"Yes, but."
"No buts. Just yes or no answers. "
"Yes."
"When she married you, did you make her think you would quit your work and just wait on her?"
"No."
"Did she demand that you change anything before you married? "
"No. "
"Did you share your plans for when you had a new world to settle. "
"Yes."
"Last question. You can debate with me about your answers after you sleep on it. Did she ever share her thoughts on what she wanted?"
He sat quiet, I'm sure wracking his brain for examples.
"Don't worry about answering tonight. Get some rest and we will talk again tomorrow."
"Gabe. I haven't been sleeping. I keep seeing her aiming the firearm at me, Natasha in her grasp and Owen on the floor."
"The medic probably has some sleeping pills. Would you like me to ask? I know I needed them after my trauma. You need full faculties to process what happened."
He nods his head. "Alright, just for tonight. I don't want to need them to sleep."

Prompt. "A new age is in reach, waiting to be seized by one strong enough to dare."

The old man coughed at the end of his rant. Bartholomew instantly by his side with his favorite hot tea.

"I'm sure that is true, but another Void expedition seems pointless. We have been sinking funds into this project with no returns."

"I will personally bankroll this expedition. My little gent has been a lucky charm. I no longer need the company to back it. However, if I find something this time it will be all mine."

"Since I cannot dissuade you, I am at least glad the company will be safe from this obsession of yours."

The old man flushed, yelling, "out, out you ungrateful pup!"

The younger gentleman silently took his leave.

"Sir, may I suggest something?" Bartholomew asked.

"Yes, yes. Of course."

"Your young gent as you call him has been very adept at seeing gaps in the systems, both your accounts and in the household. Perhaps he could also see something that previous expeditions have missed?"

"I know you dislike him."

"True. But I cannot deny the benefits he has brought you. As I said, it is only a suggestion. Perhaps you can simply give him the reports to examine."

"Perhaps. I must think on this."

Prompt. "Don't touch that one. You won't like what happens next."

Mari stops me from coming any closer to a particular terrarium. "What does it do?" I look at the delicate looking plant.

"The sap is highly acidic. I took it from Sterling. I think Peter might find a medical use for it. Would you possibly need a strong acid in engineering?"

"Nothing comes to mind. However, Aria might have a use in her inventions. Depending on how corrosive it is, she might be able to use it in something."

"What a good idea. I should have thought of her."

"Well, you're still getting to know everyone's quirks. Aria and acid isn't the first combo you think of. I can see why you thought of Peter though. I doubt he comprehends the whole catching more flies with honey than vinegar."

She laughs like I hoped.

"He can be pretty acidic at times. Should I name it after him? I doubt anyone has cataloged it."

It was my turn to laugh. "He would probably see it as an honor, not an insult."

"Well, I'll hold off on naming it. Some other name may fit better."

"True. I just came to see if you were able to get what you needed during the evacuation."

"Thank you, Mark." She laid her hand on my arm. "But I didn't have much and most was on board. There was really just me."

"Well I'm glad you have everything. But please let me, us, know if you could use anything else."

"I will. And next time you stop by, let me know if you want tea. I can make a mean cup."

"You want me to stop by?" I cringe as I hear the hopefulness in my tone.

"Yes. I enjoy your company."

"Good to know."

Prompt. “It was so terribly cold. Snow was falling, and it was almost dark.”

The light from the distant volcano was now brighter than the sky. Jason walked from the troop ship towards the warmth of the base, but held little hope for it soothing his disturbed mind. This mission was the last straw. Fenix used to be a force for peace and order. Now it was little more than a mercenary organization. He knew Rask's mercilessness wouldn't be punished. It might just be rewarded, despite the directive to take the hostiles alive. He stopped to watch the last rays of light disappear on Sthenos's horizon. It felt like a good analogy for the pride he once had in his position of Captain. A gust of the bitter wind blew snow tainted with the ever present volcanic ash into his face. The decision solidified. He would have to resign and go Recreant. His father would hate it. However, his only concern was for his younger brother Peter. Fortunately he was in the medical program and showed an aptatude to become a great doctor. There was little chance he would be transfered to the military branch. He would have to leave everything he knew, including his family, but the decision made him feel lighter. Maybe the sun had set on this part of his life, but he could see a new future dawning.

Prompt. Bound, Place

The door closed and locked. While not bound but we are confined to this place. My baby sister whimpers and stirs in my arms. I don't have the heart to tell her it will be alright. She's too smart to fall for it anyway. So I just embrace her a bit tighter and hum a tune I know she likes.

Prompt. Island

The fractured moon reminds me of one of the #island s where I grew up. A volcanic eruption split the land apart, actually disintegrating the central section. "I thought this moon didn't have much in the way of tectonics," I say.

"No, there is no record of such activity, but I doubt tectonic activity could wreak such destruction," the captain replies.

"Um, there are actually some life signs coming from the nearest fragment," someone calls out.

"Well, maybe we can ask them what happened."

Prompt. Spring

Normally working on inventions helps cleat my mind, but not lately. I'll find gears, #spring s and relays missing from something I swear I just finished. This place is getting to me. Hearing something from the hall, I pick up a wrench and go towards the sound. Despite examining the area, I found nothing. Maybe I can borrow my bot back for a bit. Just to stand guard. I shake my head at myself. "I must have some cogs loose in my clock tower." Returning to my workshop, I stop dead. Rather than something being missing, my project is destroyed. "I hate this part of space!"

The ancient mechs stood vigil over the place. It is said an intense battle occurred here. However, no records remain. Unless you count these metal mammoths’ silent testimony.
